Suzy, Connor and I were sitting around on Sunday morning wondering what we could do. We’ve lived here our entire lives and wanted to experience something different. We all started looking on our iPads trying to figure it out then Suzy said, “What about Washington Oaks Gardens?” Connor and I had no idea what that was or where it was. After checking the map, we realized it was a short drive down to Palm Coast just south of Marineland so we jumped in the truck and headed out for a Day Trip Washington Oaks Gardens State Park.
Washington Oaks Gardens is a pristine piece of Florida perfectly situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River. As you enter the park, you’re guided down a long narrow corridor with giant oak trees lining the drive. You quickly get a sense that this land hasn’t changed for many years and you’re transported back to a time when things were much simpler.
After checking the park map, we decided to hike a few trails and explore. As you stroll through the pathways, you can hear the continuous breeze that makes it’s way from the ocean and trough the tree canopies. There is a beautiful koi pond and rose garden as well as a long winding path along the Matanzas River. We also found an orchard with huge lemon trees and other fruit trees.
We made a pitstop in the old caretakers house where they have a ton of interesting facts about the history of the land, who owned it and how it came to be today. There is also a neat little souvenir shop where we grabbed some postcards and seasalt as gifts.
We worked up an appetite walking around all morning and into the afternoon, so we hit up JT’s Seafood Shack under the trees in Palm Coast along A1A. After watching the Jaguar game and eating a giant seafood platter, we hopped in the truck & started heading home. We realized there was a museum just down the road where we’ve seen giant wood carvings for many years. It was the Paul Baliker Museum. What an amazing place!!! That’s a story for another time so check back soon for our next adventure.
